Insurance Policies

Risk Management manages the following insurance policies for South Texas College:

Commercial Auto – Insurance for cars, trucks, and other road vehicles. Provides financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could arise there from.

Commercial Crime – Insurance to manage the loss exposures resulting from criminal acts such as robbery, burglary, and other forms of theft.

Commercial Property/Flood – Provides protection against most risks to property such as fire, theft, flood, and some weather damage.

Cyber – Protects businesses and individual users from Internet-based risks and more generally from risks relating to information technology infrastructure and activities.

General Liability – Protects the College from the risks of liabilities imposed by lawsuits and similar claims.

International – Provides protection to College employees, vehicles, and equipment traveling abroad.

Legal Liability – Also known as “Errors and Omissions Insurance” or “Malpractice Insurance.” Coverage focuses specifically on the lawsuits that stem from the College’s professional services.

Owner-Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) for 2015 Bond Construction – An insurance policy held by a property owner during the construction or renovation of a property, which is typically designed to cover virtually all liability and loss arising from the construction project (subject to the usual exclusions). In OCIP, all construction, materials, hazard, workers’ compensation, environmental, terrorism, and other building-related insurance is purchased by the property owner as part of a single policy from a single insurer. Thus, property owners benefit from OCIP in that all insurance costs are collected into a single policy premium, rather than embedded inside the bids of dozens of contractors and subcontractors, and they have direct control over administrative costs by dealing with a single broker and insurer.

  • Builders Risk – Property coverage for the projects during the construction process, which can also include coverage for materials. Purchasing through the OCIP ensures that there is continuity, no gaps in coverage, deductibles are similar, and lower costs.
  • Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) – Provides pollution/environmental coverage for a pollution-related claim that arises during the project.
  • Excess Liability – Additional limits of coverage over the primary general liability.
  • Owners Protective Professional Indemnity (OPPI) – Indemnifies the College for its loss resulting from a claim associated with the architects or engineers. The architects and engineers only carry a $1,000,000 limit on their professional liability coverage; therefore, this policy provides the College additional coverage in excess of the architects and engineers policy.
  • Primary General Liability – Provides primary coverage for third party bodily injury or property damage along with products and completed operations with a 10-year reporting period for all contractors enrolled in the OCIP.

Student Insurance

  • Student Accident Insurance (Workforce Training Programs) – A type of professional liability insurance which protects students and faculty in Workforce Training Programs from liability associated with wrongful practices resulting in bodily injury, medical expenses, and property damage, as well as the cost of defending lawsuits related to such claims.
  • Student/Faculty Medical Professional Liability Insurance – Also known as malpractice insurance. A type of professional liability insurance which protects students and faculty in the Nursing & Allied Health Program from liability associated with wrongful practices resulting in bodily injury, medical expenses, and property damage, as well as the cost of defending lawsuits related to such claims.
  • Voluntary Student Accident Insurance – Secondary insurance that covers South Texas College students. In the event that the student does not have primary coverage, the Voluntary Student Accident Insurance becomes the primary insurance. Available to students while on College grounds and during any College-sanctioned times and events.

Worker’s Compensation – (Administered by Human Resources)
